What’s the meaning of life?

Prayer of St. Francis of Assissi

Make me and instrument of Thy peace;
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy.

Grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love: for it is in
giving that we receive;
pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying in ego that we are born to eternal Love.

My comments:

This has to be my favorite prayer of all time. I remember the first time I heard it, I was with my Dad at Valley Hope. We read it together. I think it’s incredible. If I ever need a boost I just read this. It gets me out of my ego-driven mind and helps me remember what it’s all about.

Fact:

The adult May fly lives only a few hours. Basically, it is born, grows up, mates and dies within HOURS. It does not eat, doesn’t need to. It doesn’t even have a mouth or stomach. To top it off, the eggs hatch after it’s died. “What’s the point? There is no point. Life is inevitable.” ~ Sheldon Kopp

My comments:

Our lives are meaningful based on what we determine that meaning to be. To the May fly, it’s life is to be born, reproduce, die. All within a matter of a few hours. To us, that seems so pointless…. It is just perspective. I ask myself, what things and actions do i see as meaningful? How do i make the most out of my inevitable life? I do it through the prayer of st. francis of assissi.
